The Friday Music Shuffle (3.3.23)

by Rick Johansen

Greeting pop pickers and welcome to the Friday Music Shuffle where my music device selects ten random tunes from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. And if you want to sing along, then why not join in the ‘fun’?

Anyway, let’s go!

  1. Blacker by the Ballistic Brothers. Wow! Some old skool acid-jazz, progressive house to start with. Nice.
  2. We Didn’t Start The Fire by Billy Joel. 118 social events since Joel was born in 1949. Incredible record.
  3. Portrait (He Knew) by Kansas. Back to 1977 for some quality prog rock from the band’s Point Of Know Return LP.
  4. Man In A Shed by Nick Drake. Truly gorgeous song from Drake’s 1969 long player Five Leaves Left. Such a talent, gone far too soon.
  5. Dr Dancer by the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver. What a great band they were. This comes from 1975’s Reach For The Sky.
  6. I Am The Storm by Blue Oyster Cult. This rocker comes from 1979’s Mirrors LP. Obviously, I love it, especially the more ‘full’ production compared to their early stuff.
  7. For Your Babies by Simple Red. A guilty pleasure, indeed. Simply Mick can really sing and I like him. So there.
  8. Dark Eyed Cajun Woman by The Doobie Brothers. 50 bloody years released what I consider to be their finest album, The Captain And Me. Buy this record.
  9. The 59th Street Bridge Song by Harper’s Bizarre. Their cover of Paul Simon’s classic. Fun fact: band member Ted Templeman was the Doobie Brothers producer in their golden years.
  10. Exit Music (For A Film) by Radiohead. From 1997’s OK Computer, this is of course magnificent.

My Desert Island Disc for this week is of course the exciting number ten selection Exit Music by Radiohead.

That’s all, folks!
