The Friday Music Shuffle (29th August 2025)

The final shuffle of the British Summer 2025.

by Rick Johansen

Good day and welcome to the final music shuffle of the summer of 2025. This time next week, we will be deep into winter, or autumn as some folk call it, and it will be pitch dark by 6.00 pm. And in little more than a month’s time, it will be pitch dark by lunchtime. So even if it may feel like winter’s here already – and trust me, it does up our way – it’s still summer until Sunday.

What happens, as ever, is this. I set my music device free and it selects ten random songs from my collection. I then tell you what it has chosen and I invite you to click on the title to listen, or even sing, along.

I hope you will find something you like.

  1. You’re Going To Lose That Girl by The Beatles. What a beauty from their wonderful 1965 album Help!
  2. Choo Choo by Santana. Latter day Santana (2016) with many members from the original line-up playing on Santana IV. Excellent.
  3. The Shape I’m In by The Band. And now we go back to 1970 for an absolute classic from the Stage Fright LP.
  4. Drop by The Pharcyde. Hip-hop royalty, with a joint from 1995’s very fine album Labcabincalifornia.
  5. Joy Ride by Rick Derringer. Instrumental track from Derringer’s best album, 1973’s All American Boy. This isn’t great but the rest of the album is beyond great.
  6. Stand Up by Graham Nash. Bang average track from Graham’s so so 2023 album Now.
  7. A Choir Of One by Thom Yorke. Not everyone’s cup of tea, I’d imagine, particularly as this track from the soundtrack of the movie Suspiria comes in at over 14 minutes, but I love it.
  8. Mercury by Steve Lacy. Absolutely fantastic from the great man’s outstanding 2022 long player Gemini Rights. Such a talent.
  9. Sands Of Nevada by Mark Knopfler. Beautiful track from 2000’s Sailing To Philadelphia.
  10. Fortunate Son (Live) by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Finally released in 2022, the track is from the Live At The Albert Hall 1970 album. The sheer power of Fogerty and the band is incredible.

This week’s Desert Island Disc is You’re Going To Lose That Girl by The Beatles.

Well, that was fun, for me. See you again in the autumn. Have a good week till next week.
