The Friday Music Shuffle (17.4.26)

by Rick Johansen

Hi pop pickers and welcome to my weekly music shuffle.

It’s the same shuffle as it’s always been. My music device selects ten songs from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. I’d love it if you would listen along and see whether you like the music. Just click on the title.

Let’s have some fun.

  1. Mercurio by Karol G. Gorgeous song by the Columbian songstress, which comes from her 2023 album Mañana Será Bonito.
  2. Discoverer by R.E.M. An absolute banger from the band’s final album, 2011’s Collapse Into Now.
  3. Austin Powers by The Wondermints. Back to 1997 with this classic from the criminally underrated Wondermints. This song was directly commissioned from the band by Mike Myers.
  4. The Next 20th Century by Father John Misty. Simply brilliant by the great Josh Tillman from his 2022 album Chloë and the Next 20th Century.
  5. Love Hangover by Diana Ross. FYI, this song from 1976 appears on one of my Motown Chartbuster albums from the 1970s. It’s okay, is the best I will say about Ms Ross, who I have always thought was seriously overrated and the Supremes did their best work after she left.
  6. Angelo by BC Camplight. Short little tune from the great man’s 2020 LP Shortly After Takeoff. Nice.
  7. The Book I Haven’t Read by Lambchop. This joint comes from their 2000 album Nixon and it’s lovely.
  8. New South Wales by Jason Isbell. Can’t wait to see Jason again at Bristol’s Beacon in June. This lush track from his 2013 album Southeastern hopefully explains why. He’s amazing.
  9. How Do You Do It? by The Beatles. Yes, The Beatles version of the Gerry and the Pacemakers classic. Love it.
  10. Neal’s Fandango by The Doobie Brothers. Great track from their outstanding 1975 album Stampede. Buy this record.

A very strong shuffle IMHO, as the kids say. This week’s Desert Island Disc by a short head is the exciting number ten song Neal’s Fandango by The Doobie Brothers.

Hope you enjoyed that. I did.

Have a good week till next week.
