Summer Holiday?

by Rick Johansen

Next year’s holiday is going to be fun, then. The odds are that there won’t be a vaccine for Covid-19 and there might not be an effective type of treatment, either. If all the airlines don’t go bust first, things might just be a bit different. In fact, they might be so different, we might think twice before even booking, especially when and if the days of cheap flights are over.

And what of half-board and all-inclusive holidays? If Covid-19 is still around, those types of holidays won’t be. It will be self-catering and eating out at socially distance respecting cafés, bars and restaurants, if you can get a table.

Here’s a taster of a typical day!

  • 23.00. Arrive Bristol Airport Silver Zone parking zone. Queue to leave car keys. Attach face mask.
  • 1.00 Leave Silver Zone Parking. Queue for bus which has two thirds of seats removed to allow for social distancing.
  • 2.00. Arrive outside Bristol Airport terminal building to join queue for check in
  • 6.00. Arrive at check in desk. Check in.

  • 7.15. Stand in ultra violet light before body search carried out by officer in full PPE.
  • 8.30. Observe social distancing in departure lounge, unable to move from designated area, apart from a toilet break, until flight called.
  • 9.30. Go to gate, maintaining social distancing at all times.
  • 9.45. Wait in gate, observing social distancing. Attach fresh face mask and put on gloves, neither of which should be removed until arriving at ultimate destination.
  • 10.15 Board aircraft, ensuring social distancing at all times, until you are seated. Cabin staff will be dressed in full PPE.
  • 11.00. Aircraft finally takes off. There is no inflight service. Passengers are not allowed to leave their seats apart from going to the toilet.
  • 14.00. Arrive in destination.
  • 14.30. Observe social distancing by joining queues for non EU passport controls.
  • 16.30. Join queues to collect baggage from reclaim area, observing social distancing.
  • 17.30. Enter arrivals hall. Join queues to join taxi rank, buses to resorts and hire car companies.
  • 19.00. Board bus to resort.
  • 20.00. Arrive at resort, join queue to check in at hotel.
  • 21.00. Go to room for two weeks quarantine.

Two weeks later, repeat the operation in reverse.

Hmm. Think I’ll stay at home next year.
