Vladimir Putin has been prattling away for at least an hour and a half to his Kremlin audience, reminding them of the lie that he is Superman fighting off the evil Brainiac. (It was something like that: I didn’t follow the translation particularly well as I had the TV on silent whilst listening to Lauren Laverne on BBC 6 Music.) Anyway, Mad Vlad says he’s the good guy in all this, beating back the neo Nazis of Ukraine who are supported by the evil west. His ‘special operation’, which was supposed to last a couple of days, is running slightly late, but these pesky fascist invaders. They’ve delayed everything. But soon he got onto the main issue: LGBT rights.
After telling his audience that paedophilia was the norm in the west, and in many places compulsory (again, I may have misheard, but not by much) he warmed to his principle theme. “Family means a union between a man and a woman, so say the sacred texts of every religion on Earth. But the West is doubting these sacred texts. We have to protect our children from degradation and degeneration – and we will,” he explains, with an apparently straight face. Having already told his audience the devil is on the front line with Ukrainian troops, Vlad is portraying God as an absolute wrong’ un. At least on LGBT matters, it appears that Vlad is on the same page as the Scottish Nationalist Party.
On a more serious note, this rambling speech is far more worrying than many of us may realise. It’s an endless whinge about history and land grabs, reminiscent of Adolf Hitler’s pre WW2 speeches, and every bit as worrying.
Putin says that the USA and France are threatening the mother land with nuclear weapons and are refusing to allow neutral weapons inspectors to check what’s going on, rather like Saddam Hussein who refused to allow UN inspectors into Iraq to inspect the nuclear weapons he didn’t have, except of course that the USA and France (and us) have nuclear weapons which we use not to blow up other countries but as a deterrent. To be clear, Vlad is talking bollocks.
Still, this must all make jolly reading for both the far left and far right who think that Putin is a decent all-round human being and in fact NATO, along with Ukraine, are the dark side. I don’t believe everything I read in the papers – and indeed I believe nothing I read in some – but frankly for all the many faults of our politics and journalists, it does not require a great deal of analysis to conclude that Putin might not be the good guy in this.
To summarise, the big issue is gay people and what the ‘sacred texts’ say about them that is the problem, here. That these texts were written at a time when almost no one was educated about anything and no one knew what was going on – and you know I’m right because I’ll bet you can’t find a genuine video on you tube of Jesus turning water to wine – is irrelevant to Vlad. I just worry that one day he might decide to blow the world up because his God told him to.
