Number 6583

And the blogs just keep on coming

by Rick Johansen

Thank you for reading my blog. It’s been going since late 2012 and to date I have posted 6582 blogs. An even better statistic is that I have written 4.5 million words. In 2012, my blogs averaged 136 words (there were only three blogs), the year after it was 299 and so far in 2026 your average blog rambles on for 724 words. When I refer to Eclectic Blue as a body of work, I mean it. I’ve always wanted to be a writer and while I never made it to the mainstream – obviously! – I’ve been nothing if not persistent. And I am very grateful to everyone who takes some time out of their day to read something.

Now here’s a thing. February 2026 has been the second most successful month in the history of this blog. One reason was this particular blog about The Guardian newspaper, which has turned viciously against the Labour Party in general and Keir Starmer in particular. It took off on threads and Bluesky and interestingly the majority of new readers live in the USA. Here’s where the biggest number of readers come from:

  • UK
  • USA
  • Hong Kong SAR China
  • Singapore
  • Belgium
  • Germany
  • Ireland
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Sweden

I know: bonkers, innit? My blog stats provider could be even more specific than that, with specific cities, but that would cost me even more than the blog costs to maintain and I can neither afford it nor justify it. Shame.

I need to thank one more person and that’s Dr John Dee, as he is known to a legion of Gasheads (Bristol Rovers fans). He designed the blog for me and maintains it, too. Without him, my dream of writing might never have happened. I cannot thank him enough.

As for the future, I’m not going anywhere if I can possibly help it, although The Grim Reaper may have other ideas. I suppose the one thing that keeps me going is that someone, somewhere with influence will turn me into an overnight success. If that faint hope totally disappears then maybe I’ll take the hint and call it a day.

I’ll end where I started by thanking you for your support. Particular thanks are due to those of you who have bought me a coffee for my efforts. I’m flattered beyond belief, as I was when I had a letter from HMRC after they had been informed I had failed to declare substantial sums for tax purposes. I was worried sick when I got the letter, until I realised you would need to earn over £1000 a year to start paying tax. That someone believed I was raking in a four figure sum every year was beyond hilarious, but also rather sad on their part to dob me in.

This blog might be crap, but it’s my crap, all my crap with no AI to assist. See you all tomorrow, I hope for number 6584. It can’t be as bad as the others, can it? Don’t bet against it.
