Money money money

One of the funniest, albeit also most unhinged and slightly worrying facebook groups (I am not a member: it’s just appeared on my timeline after being shared by others) is called Keep Cash: Worldwide. On the face of it, a reasonable enough point of view. A small minority of people want to preserve cash rather than being cashless, like most of us. I suppose what I should have said is that it’s not so much the Facebook group that is funny, unhinged and slightly worrying: it’s the people who are using it.

Almost entirely old and very right wing, they rail against the mainstream media (MSM), the vast majority of which, certainly in terms of newspapers and 50% of news TV outlets, is consumed by people who are old and very right wing. I’m not sure quite how they managed to square the circle there, but let’s look at the arguments. The hated MSM tells people what to think and those who believe what they are told are called Sheeple. Oddly enough, I don’t believe a word I read in most of the gutter press, which is the vast majority of it and nothing on GB News and Talk TV, but I suspect the Keep Cash brigade haven’t thought this through very well.

Another group called Keep Cash has disappeared through the looking glass with this assessment of what’s going on:

“Not only will a digital currency mean that the government and banks can track every transaction and every move you make, it also means that if linked with a social credit system, every  purchase you make and every time you pay for a service your social credit and bank account could be cut according to what the government set as desirable. In a new economy based on data harvesting, this could be anything from how much meat you eat, how much alcohol you drink, how many miles you’ve done in your diesel or petrol car that contribute to carbon emissions , or it could based on what you say on social media or whether you’re a political activist that’s critical of the government.”

Like none of this couldn’t happen today? Give it a rest, please. But there is a serious side to it all. Some people among the hard of thinking believe it.

They are supported by the batshit crazies of The Light ‘newspaper’, which states that no planes crashed into the twin towers on 9/11, that vaccines caused more deaths than Covid, that climate change is a myth and not a fact, that 5G is inflicting on us Chernobyl levels of radiation and that everything the hated MSM says is a lie, but that everything The Light tells you is the truth.

Sure, there’s an argument to be had about the steady move to a cashless society because I understand the reluctance of some people to embrace change. And when they’re fed bollocks by nutcases they may be moved to see a conspiracy in everything. But there just isn’t. Let’s look at the evidence:

  • Planes did crash into the World Trade Centre. We saw it on TV. Thousands of people died.
  • 67 million people died of Covid in 2022 alone. Vaccines have prevented at least 20 million deaths. Some people died after getting vaccines. They are all being investigated to see if they were as a direct result of the jab. No one is hiding the facts.
  • There is no scientific debate about climate change. The only debate was whether humans were causing it. We are.
  • 5G isn’t showering us with radiation. Are you mad?
  • And getting rid of cash isn’t a worldwide conspiracy to enslave us and watch over us.

Keep Cash: Worldwide says it is just somewhere to debate the subject and I suppose we should accept their word on that. Many of its members feel otherwise and seem to genuinely glory in their ignorance, stupidity and gullibility, the things they accuse us sheeple of.  Well, you can’t argue with pork, can you?

The best thing about Keep Cash: Worldwide is that they say they depend on members of the group to fund them. No shady governments or Big Brother organisations are involved. And how do they get their funds? By way of … cashless donations. You couldn’t make it up. Surely, they should have an army of collectors going round with buckets and keeping the money stuffed underneath their beds?

There will always be cash, at least in the UK, for as long as people want to use it. Some organisations and businesses don’t accept cash so those who don’t like the idea of going cashless can shop around for an alternative. And maybe they can go the whole hog and close down their bank accounts, just in case Big Brother makes a note of their financial transactions?  Just demand that their pensions be paid in cash at the post office and make their own lives as difficult as possible? You know it doesn’t make sense but when did that stop stupid people doing stupid things?
