On a balmy autumn day (16c, so pretty good), it’s time for the random iPod shuffle to blurt out some Friday tunes, here from the bowels of my man cave.
What do you make of this lot?
1. Are You Ready for Love? by Nancy Wallace. Folk version of Elton John’s belter from the Thomas Bell sessions EP. I find it hard going, to be honest.
2. Give It Up by KC and the Sunshine Band. Harry Casey’s brilliant band made some of the bess disco funk of all time and this is up there with the best of the best.
3. Just Because by John Lennon. A bonus track on the wonderful Rock N Roll album, Lennon belts out Lloyd Price’s classic. He’s my favourite rock and roll singer of all time, along with John Fogerty.
4. Bacaroo by the High Llamas. From the wonderful Can Cladders, Sean O’Hagan’s post Beach Boys Smile-sounding band hit the button.
5. Miyoko by Youssou N’Dour. Senegal’s finest, providing some foot-tapping, hand-clapping magic from the one album of his that I possess, the excellent Best of Youssou N’Dour.
6. Supernatural Superserious by REM. From their 14th album, the brilliant Accelerate, this is one of my very favourite tunes they ever made. Much missed.
7. My Friend of Misery by Metallica. You always get what it says on the tin win these guys.
8. Mona Lisa by Nat King Cole. What else to follow REM and Metallica? Only the rich, velvety tones of the truly great Nat!
9. Timor by Shakira. From Oral Fixation 2, the awesome voice of Columbia’s finest fills the room.
10. Your Loving Arms by Billie Ray Martin. You might not think you know this one, but you will.
