The Friday Music Shuffle (26.9.25)

by Rick Johansen

Yes, here we are again, the Friday Music Shuffle. Ten songs chosen at random by my music device and I tell you what it’s chosen. Please listen along by clicking on the song title, whether it’s an old favourite or something new (new, meaning something you haven’t heard before).

Hope you have some fun.

  1. Livin’ Underwater (Is Something Wild) by The Avalanches. Fantastically eccentric and of course beautiful, from 2016’s Wildflower LP.
  2. Runnin’ Out by Chickenfoot. Back to 2009 with a hard rocker from the supergroup’s eponymous album. Sammy Hagar, Chad Smith, Joe Satriani and Michael Anthony – some band, eh?
  3. Oliver James by Fleet Foxes. 2008 this time, from the mighty Fleet Foxes. What a voice Robin Pecknold has.
  4. Wind Chimes by the Beach Boys. Quite beautiful from 1967’s Smiley Smile. The genius of Brian Wilson at work.
  5. Cotton Fields by Creedence Clearwater Revival. What a classic song and a great cover by John Fogerty and co.
  6. Push It Along by A Tribe Called Quest. Incredibly, 1990 for this all-time classic from – deep breath – People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, one of the greatest albums of all time.
  7. Carry On/Questions by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Classic.
  8. Eight Ball by Underworld. Incredibly, this banger takes us back to 1999. Tune!
  9. Hey Baby by DJ Otzi. Yes, I really do own this record. A bit embarrassing, but it does remind me of holidays with young children. That’s my excuse anyway.
  10. Reasons (Saturday Night) by Faithless Feat. Ian Dury. Maxi Jazz and Ian Dury both much missed. This is rather lovely.

Today’s Desert Island Disc is a tricky selection but I will plump for Carry On/Questions by CSN&Y, even though I prefer the live version from 2012, without Neil.

Well, I enjoyed that. See you next time. Have a good week till next week.
