The Good Friday Music Shuffle (29.3.24)

Crucifixion special

by Rick Johansen

Hi pop pickers and welcome to this week’s music shuffle. Ten songs, chosen from my collection entirely at random by my music device, I tell you what it’s chosen and it’s your once in a lifetime opportunity to listen, and even sing, along.

I hope you find something you like.

  1. The Wild One Forever by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Back to 1976 for a track from Tom’s stellar eponymous debut album.
  2. Centerfield by John Fogerty. The former Creedence man’s brilliant homage to his beloved baseball. Everything on the album from 1985, Centerfield, is played and sung by Fogerty.
  3. What A Time by Bruce Hornsby. The criminally underrated Hornsby from his 1993 album Harbor Lights. What a piano player.
  4. Maybe I’m Amazed by Billy Joel. A joint from the Art of McCartney album where various artists cover Macca’s classics. A very shouty but okay performance.
  5. Toko by Jordan Rakei Feat. Richard Spaven. Well, this is great, from the boy’s 2016 long player, Cloak.
  6. Domingo Echao by Los Amigos Invisibles. Magnificent from Venezuela’s finest, from 2000’s indispensable Arepa 3000. Buy this record.
  7. Boomerang by Mattiel. Superb stuff from Mattiel’s 2022 album Georgia Gothic.
  8. Purple Hills by D12. Back to 2001 for this banger featuring Eminem. It’s about Purple Pills really, obvs.
  9. You Belong To Me by The Doobie Brothers. From 1977’s Livin’ On The Faultline, Michael McDonald’s version of the Doobie was a lot different to the original version. But what a voice.
  10. Gatúbela by Karol G Feat. Maldy. Brilliant track from 2023’s Mañana Será Bonito. If you are offended by acres of bare male and female flesh, please look away now.

This week’s Desert Island Disc is, inevitably, Centerfield by John Fogerty.

Well, that was fun (for me, anyway).

Have a good week ’til next week.

Happy holidays!
