The Friday Music Shuffle (9.8.24)

by Rick Johansen

Hi pop pickers.

Steely Dan sang: ‘Your everlasting summer you can see it fading fast.’ Me? I see it more like this never lasting summer isn’t fading fast because, unfortunately, it never arrived. But fear not. If you want some musical sunshine, I’ve got some for you in the form of the Friday Music Shuffle.

Ten songs from my collection, chosen at random by my music device, and I tell you what it’s chosen. Should you wish to listen, and even sing, along, by my guest.

I hope you find something you like.

  1. Longer by Dan Fogelberg. God, this is lovely, from the late Mr Fogelberg’s gorgeous 1979 album Phoenix. Such an underrated artist.
  2. Nerve by Jordan Rakei. Looking forward to seeing the brilliant Jordan Rakei at the Bristol Beacon next month. Meanwhile, here’s a great joint from 2021’s What We Call Life LP.
  3. Dusty Morning by Jonathan Edwards. No, not the triple jumper, but the American singer songwriter with a lovely track from 1971’s self-titled LP. If you can find it, buy it.
  4. Shoot Doris Day by Super Furry Animals. A bit harsh, perhaps, but this is a typically excellent track from Gruff and his chaps from 2001’s Rings Around The World.
  5. Get The Shovel And Dig The Hole by Joe Vitale. My old pal Joe with a joint from his 2008 album Speaking In Drums. So talented.
  6. Sun Probe by Barry Gray. Yes, the Sun Probe launching from Thunderbirds. Barry Gray was a genius.
  7. Fill It, Don’t Spill It by Warmduscher. Now this this is excellent and comes from 2019’s very fine Tainted Lunch album.
  8. Dumb Dumb Dumb by Teenage Fanclub. Scotland’s finest IMHO. This comes from their lovely 2000 album Howdy!
  9. How Long by J.D. Souther. This is a great joint from the great man’s eponymously titled 1972 LP, later covered by The Eagles. This version features Eagle Glenn Frey on guitar.
  10. Oh Mama by Twin Peaks. Great rocking track from the band’s 2019 album Lookout Low.

This week’s Desert Island Disc is the exciting number nine tune How Long by J.D. Souther.

Have a good week till next week!
