The Friday Music Shuffle (6.6.25)

First shuffle of summer special

by Rick Johansen

Hi pop-pickers and welcome to my Friday Music Shuffle.

All my life I’ve suffered for my music and now it’s your turn. What happens is this. My music device selects 10 random tracks from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. Please click on the title to listen to the music and, if you can, why not sing along?

I hope you find something you like.

  1. Fucking Wizardry by Self Esteem. Fantastic song from Rebecca Lucy Taylor’s banging album Prioritise Pleasure.
  2. Chasing The Tail Of A Dream by The Coral. Back to 2016 and a great track from their album Distance Inbetween.
  3. Living With War by Neil Young. Back to 2006 with Old Shakey not happy with George W. Bush and the endless war in Iraq.
  4. Sugarushhh by Overmono. Rather lovely from their 2023 debut long player Good Lies.
  5. Quest For Ancient Colour by Manic Street Preachers. I very much enjoyed 2021’s The Ultra Vivid Lament and this track hopefully goes some way to explain just why.
  6. Dog Bark Dark by Peter Brewis. Half of the brilliant Field Music, here young Peter stretches out and I think it’s brilliant. The LP is called Blowdry Colossus. PS There is some dog barking on it.
  7. To Dream The Impossible Dream by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Back to 1974 and a very short and bonkers version of the old classic, taken from … The Impossible Dream album.
  8. Mighty Peace by Yusuf/Cat Stevens. Amiable enough tune from Cat’s patchy 2017 LP The Laughing Apple.
  9. My Traveling Star by James Taylor. Although 2002’s October Road wasn’t up there with Taylor’s great albums, it’s still pretty good and this is pretty good, too.
  10. You Are Everything by Michael McDonald. Sensational cover of the Stylistics’ classic by the greatest blue eyed soul singer of them all.

This week’s Desert Island Disc is the last song, You Are Everything by Michael McDonald.

Not a classic week, but pretty good nonetheless.

Have a good week till next week.
