The Friday Music Shuffle (31st July 2026)

Greetings pop-pickers and welcome to the Friday Music Shuffle, that fun-packed time of the week when my music device selects ten random songs from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen.

It’s the last day of July which means that from Saturday we will be in the last month of the Summer of 2026. So, let’s enjoy the summer while we still can.

How about playing along with me? All you need do is click on the title of each song and you can listen and even sing along.

1. What? by The Move. From 1970’s Looking On, here’s Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood getting all proggy. Excellent.
2. I Need To Know by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Now it’s back to 1978 and a great joint from the band’s album You’re Gonna Get It! One of the best rock bands of all time.
3. Music For A Found Harmonium by Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Incredibly, this one goes back to 1984 and it’s lovely.
4. Wait A Minute Baby by The Marmalade. Forgettable tune from this otherwise great outfit, filler from a greatest hits LP.
5. Body Talks by The Struts. Lead singer Luke Spiller bears an uncomfortable physical resemblance to the late Freddie Mercury but happily that’s where the resemblance ends. Decent tune from this pop rock band’s 2018 Young And Dangerous.
6. There Goes My Miracle by Bruce Springsteen. Very un-Bruce from 2019’s Western Stars. But I love it.
7. Sunday Best (Alternate Take) by Bobbie Gentry. Quite beautiful from the 2018 compilation The Girl From Chickasaw County – The Complete Capitol Masters. Buy this record.
8. Fireside by Arctic Monkeys. Now we’re cooking. A cracking joint from 2013’s AM.
9. Same Old Loverman by Gordon Lightfoot. So good from Gordon’s 1971 LP Summer Side Of Life.
10. Wrecking Ball by Waxahatchee. Lovely cover of the Gillian Welch song, this is a live performance from this year featuring the brilliant MJ Lenderman.
