The Friday Music Shuffle (20th March 2026)

by Rick Johansen

Greetings pop pickers and welcome to this week’s music shuffle.

As ever, my music device will choose ten random songs from my collection and I will tell you what it’s chosen. Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to click on the song title in order to listen and, if you so choose, sing along.

Leave your comfort zone and join me. I hope you find something you like.

  1. I’m Stepping Out by John Lennon. From Lennon’s (and Yoko Ono’s) album Milk And Honey, released three years after his death in 1984. It’s not great, to be honest.
  2. Where’s It Going To End by Clifford T. Ward. And now we go back to 1973 for a joint taken from Clifford’s lovely album Home Thoughts From Abroad. Such a talented and, sadly, little-known British singer songwriter.
  3. Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Sheer magnificence from John Fogerty, as he sings about how rich folk avoided the draft. This could have been written about Donald Trump. From 1969’s Willy and the Poor Boys.
  4. Are You What You Want To Be? by Foster The People. Mark Foster has a great ear for a banging tune, which is what this is, from 2014’s Supermodel long player.
  5. Step By Step by Eddie Chacon. Simply beautiful by the man who was Eddie in Charles and Eddie (Would I Lie To You You?). It’s from his 2023 album Sundown, my favourite record of that year.
  6. Oh, Atlanta by Little Feat. I’m spoiling you all today, as we now listen to this classic from the band’s 1974 LP Feats Don’t Fail Me Now.
  7. The Model by Kraftwerk. We’re in 1978 for this ageless classic from The Man-Machine.
  8. Clown’s Tambourine by Bruce Hornsby. This from the great man’s epic 1998 double album Spirit Trail. He’s so good, still.
  9. Walking Contradiction by Green Day. Now we go back to 1995 and a banger from their excellent album Insomniac.
  10. Sally G by Paul McCartney and Wings. This is quite the day for sub-standard post Beatles music, this time Macca from 1975’s Venus and Mars.

With apologies to John Fogerty, this week’s Desert Island Disc is Step By Step by Eddie Chacon.

Thanks for playing along. Have a good week till next week.

PS If you’re wondering what on Earth the photo has to do with this blog, the answer is nothing. But I was drinking in there 50 years ago today. It was Maximilians in Weston Super Mare.
