The Friday Music Shuffle (1.3.24)

Spring special

by Rick Johansen

Pissing with rain, 4c when I left the house to head off to the food bank and caught in one of a number of hailstorms that visited the village this morning. Welcome to the first day of the meteorological spring.

The sense of anticlimax is overwhelming, as it always is when winter turns to spring, but we’ve still got our music, or more specifically my music.

Yes, it’s the Friday Music Shuffle, notionally to celebrate the first day of spring. Ten songs from my collection, chosen at random by my music device and I tell you what it’s chosen.

Please click on the title to listen to the song and feel free to sing along. I hope you mind something you like.

  1. The Rover by Blackberry Smoke. Brilliant cover of the Zeppelin tune.
  2. Lately (Going Spare) by Metronomy. Well, this is lovely, from the band’s 2019 LP Metronomy Forever.
  3. When I Paint My Masterpiece by The Band. Classic Bob Dylan song from 1971’s Cahoots.
  4. TIME by Prince. Lush joint from 2014’s Art Official Age.
  5. Honey Honey by Abba. I always liked the blonde one. Benny, wasn’t it?
  6. King Of The Castle by BEAK>. We go back to 2018 for this belter from Geoff Barrow’s excellent band.
  7. Friend Like That by Girl Ray. From 2019’s excellent Girl LP, this is mint.
  8. Harvest Moon by Neil Young. Well, it’s perfect. Enjoy, too, Linda Ronstadt’s gorgeous background vocal.
  9. I Will Walk With You by Bruce Hornsby and the Range. And we’re back to 1988 with a track from my favourite musical Bruce, taken from Scenes from the Southside.
  10. A Hard Day’s Night by The Beatles. The greatest opening chord in music history.

This week’s Desert Island Disc is Harvest Moon by Neil Young.

Hope you enjoyed that.

Have a good week ’til next week!
