The Friday 13th Music Shuffle (13.9.24)

by Rick Johansen

Hi pop pickers. It’s time for that Friday Music Shuffle where I set my music device free and it chooses ten songs from my collection. I then tell you the songs it’s chosen. Should you wish to listen and indeed sing along, just click on the title.

Hope you find something you like!

  1. Good Times by Chic. Back to 1979 for this Bernard Edwards/Nile Rodgers classic. Edwards’ bassline still sounds wonderful. Eight minutes of it.
  2. Before This World/Jolly Springtime by James Taylor. 2015’s Before This World was a stunning return to form and right up there with bis best records Sweet Baby James and Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon. Lovely.
  3. Baubles, Bangles and Beads by Deodato. 1973 and a jazzy joint from Deodato’s album Prelude. Nice. Incredible guitar from John Tropea.
  4. Midnight Wind by The Association. I always loved harmony bands, few more than The Association in the late 1960s. In 1972, they released what I believe to be their finest album, Waterbeds In Trinidad from which this lovely song comes.
  5. State of Independence by Jon and Vangelis. Many prefer Donna Summer’s cover of this great song from 1981’s The Friends of Mr Cairo, but much as I loved Donna give me Messrs Anderson and Papathanassiou’s verison any day of the week.
  6. Sugar Is Sweeter by JC Bolland. Proper dance banger going back to 1996.
  7. Vegetables by The Beach Boys. In 2011, Brian Wilson finally managed to complete the lost Smile album. So good.
  8. Section by The Roots. 1996 here and a track from the very excellent Illadelph Halflife LP.
  9. Reach Out, I’ll Be There by Michael McDonald. The greatest blue eyed soul singer made two Motown albums, this from the second, Motown 2 released in 2004. Levi Stubbs would be pleased.
  10. Scream by Lindsey Buckingham. Great stuff from Lindsey’s 2021 eponymously titled album, which all Fleetwood Mac fans need to own.

This week’s Desert Island Disc is State of Independence by Jon and Vangelis.

Have a good week till next week.
