That Friday Music Shuffle (25/5)

by Rick Johansen

Yes, it’s that time of the week where excess and self-indulgence consumes this blog and I set the iPod churning out some tunes in random order for no obvious reason at all.

Here goes then. Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends.

1. Fly Trapped in a Jar by Modest Mouse. Cracking start with a song from the We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank and featuring the sheer greatness of Johnny Marr and his guitar. (See what I did there?)

2. Metal and Dust by London Grammar. Fantastic song from the If You Wait album.

3. I Want It Free by Kongos. The sons of mighty John Kongos (He’s Gonna Step On You Again/Tokoloshe Man), with a cut from the Egomaniac album. Note for next album: must do better.

4. Inoculated City by the Clash. Obviously it’s great. If you haven’t got Combat Rock, then it’s a big mistake!

5. Hydra by Toto. A great Toto line-up here, including the legendary bass player Nathan East and top drummer Simon Phillips. This one is from the 35th anniversary Live in Poland and of course it’s great,. too.

6. 007 by John Barry. Yes, seriously. It’s from an old compilation record.

7. Sunshine by Nazareth. From the Rampant album, this is anything but rampant, although it does get noisier towards the end as Dan McCafferty gargles with razor blades.

8. It Doesn’t Matter by Wyclef Jean ft the Rock. Wyclef’s The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book is a brilliant fun album and this lovely bit of nonsense with the Rock is joyous.

9. Love Surround Me by Dennis Wilson. The late, great Dennis Wilson never got to finish his second album, Bambu, but luckily the tracks were preserved and indeed some, like this one, appeared on the Beach Boys LA (Light Album).

10. Do You Love me? by Kiss. Voices too high in the mix, guitars too low as ever with so much of their work.
