Imagine going to Asda this morning to stock up on, say, pickled onions, biscuits and an AK47? To be fair, if you lived in the USA you could visit Asda’s parent store Walmart and do exactly that, except perhaps for the pickled onions. “I know that I stand with everyone in this country to condemn today’s hateful act. There are no reasons or excuses that will ever justify killing innocent people,” says Donald Trump after two more mass shootings in the land of the free. Well, yes there are. The reason is lax, or non existent, gun controls.

The latest carnage will not change anything. Your average American clings to the belief that he or she has enshrined in the constitution the right to bear arms. Americans will offer their love and prayers, perhaps hoping that God will do something about people going around murdering innocent people because the government sure as hell won’t.

Don’t pretend we would be any better than America given half the chance. If you could wander into your local Co-op and pick up a machete in order to practice creating carnage at the shopping mall, you know there would be people mad enough to do it. If you could pick up a variety of automatic weapons at Morrison’s, trolleys would be full. The simple reason we don’t have mass shootings is that nut jobs don’t have access to guns. In the UK, they resort to knives instead.

The idea in America is that people carry around guns in order to protect themselves and in the majority of instances, the system works. Pop a Smith and Wesson in your inside pocket, just in case, and more than likely it will stay there, unused. You will get home and think to yourself, “Well, that worked. My gun is a deterrent.” Of course, if you had managed to go to the same place as someone who also had a gun and had every intention of using it, it’s fair to say things might not have turned out so peacefully.

In short, the Second Amendment to the US constitution is bonkers. It reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Have a read of the definition of Militia if you don’t believe me. It effectively gives permission to every citizen to cart around an arsenal of weapons.

The shootings in Texas and Ohio will not be the last and they probably won’t be the worst we shall ever see. Love and prayers won’t bring back the dead and heal the wounded but in truth Americans don’t care in enough numbers to do anything about it.
