Mrs Eclectic Blue’s Friday Music Shuffle (21.2.20)

by Rick Johansen

In the interests of having an easy a life as possible, she who must be obeyed has instructed me to publish her latest music shuffle, where her musical device has chosen ten random tunes and she (well, I) will tell you what they are. And, depressingly, it’s really rather good.

So, let’s rock.

  1. She by Elvis Costello. Yes, that She, the Charles Aznavour classic, gets an airing thanks to the enduringly brilliant Mr Costello.
  2. Only Love Can Break Your Heart by St Etienne. A truly great cover of the Neil Young tune from his epic 1970 album After the Goldrush.
  3. Today by David Gilmour. Excellent track from the Floyd man’s 2015 album Rattle That Lock.
  4. Sunshine’s Better by John Martyn (Talvin Singh remix). Impeccable taste, here. Simply perfect.
  5. Pure Sures by the All Saints. Probably their best tune.
  6. A Message To You Rudy by the Specials (live). From their most recent album, the excellent Encore.
  7. When the War is Over by JJ Cale and Eric Clapton. Sounding very much like Call Me The Breeze, this is so good.
  8. Seven Days Too Long by Dexys Midnight Runners. From 1980’s Searching for the Young Soul Rebels, Mr Rowland on top form.
  9. Purple Haze by Groove Armada. This is truly wonderful. Rock, rap and soul all in one place.
  10. Musical Machine Gun by Kula Shaker. And finally, young Mr Mills makes a welcome appearance with this gem from the band’s 1999 album Peasants, Pigs and Astronauts.

That’s all, folks!
