Don’t believe a word

Terrifying news in tonight’s Bristol Post. “Holiday-makers going to Turkey from Bristol Airport have been told to travel only if necessary because of possible terror attacks after a snap election was called,” shrieks the newspaper all Bristol asked for but nobody now reads. Still, it’s important to follow advice like this. If you’re off for an all inclusive fortnight on the lash in Marmaris, think twice. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has said terrorists are “very likely” to carry out attacks in the country, it adds. Fuck me, I’ll try and claim a refund.

Oh, thinking about it, I can’t get a refund because I haven’t booked a holiday to Turkey. It’s a personal thing with me in that I don’t take holidays in Muslim countries, no matter how vaguely secular they say they are. I’d certainly recommend to my friends that, given the Post’s warnings, it’s best not to go because they will almost certainly get murdered by ISIS. Or will they?

It is hard to overstate the decline in journalism at the Post in recent years. The piece about Turkey is headed: “Tourists from Bristol Airport to Turkey warned as Foreign Office updates holiday travel advice.” A cursory check at the FCO website suggests that, actually, the advice is for all people travelling to Turkey and not just from Bristol. Who would have thought that the Post would try to spin a national story to make it seem like a little local difficulty?

And it’s even more inaccurate than you might think. Far from wanting to unleash the suicide murderers on Bristolians in their hotels, the FCO advise instead says: “The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to within 10 km of the border with Syria and to the city of Diyarbakir. The FCO advise against all but essential travel to: the remaining areas of Sirnak, Mardin, Sanliurfa, Gaziantep, Diyarbakir, Kilis and Hatay provinces, the provinces of Siirt, Tunceli and Hakkari.” That’s a bit different. I am not sure many people are desperate to clamber on their sunbeds next to the Syrian border, but don’t let a few unfortunate facts cloud a crap Bristol Post story.

And it is a crap story. The journalist concerned has cut and pasted advice from the FCO and made up a non story about it. Tourists have NOT been told to travel only if necessary. They’ve only been advised not to go to specific places where religious maniacs might want to kill people.

The decline of the Post continues apace. It barely pretends to be a serious newspaper these days and rubbish like this story can’t help. The future of news is on line, not the printed word. The worst thing about this story is that it comes from the Post’s website. When the Post is finally put out of it’s misery, few people will shed a tear.
